What this means in practice
A HighPass trek is a guided teahouse walk in the Nepal Himalaya, run with a government-licensed guide, a porter for every two trekkers and an acclimatisation profile that never gains more than about 500 metres of sleeping altitude a day above 3,000 metres.
We are a Kathmandu company and this is what we do first. Everest, Annapurna, Langtang, Manaslu and Mustang are half a day from our office, and the guides who lead these treks live in the valleys they walk you through.
Every itinerary is written around altitude rather than around distance. Above 3,000 metres you sleep no more than roughly 500 metres higher than the night before, and there is a genuine rest day every third or fourth day — not a shorter walk called a rest day. Guides carry a pulse oximeter and a first-aid kit, and they have the authority to turn a group around without asking us first.
We also tell you the awkward things in advance. In peak season the Lukla flight leaves from Ramechhap after a four-hour pre-dawn drive. Teahouse rooms above 4,000 metres are unheated. Hot showers and phone charging cost extra and are metered. Knowing this beforehand is the difference between an inconvenience and a bad trip.
