The 108 spouts at 3,710 metres, reached by air rather than by trail
In short
Muktinath is one of the 108 Divya Desams and a Shakti Peetha, and it is also the source of the Shaligram found in the Kali Gandaki riverbed below it. Getting there used to mean a week of walking. This itinerary uses the 20-minute Pokhara–Jomsom flight instead, which leaves in the 6.30 to 10am window because the Kali Gandaki gorge winds make afternoon landings unsafe. From Jomsom at 2,720 metres a jeep climbs an hour and a half to Ranipauwa, and the last few hundred metres to the temple are on foot or on a pony. We build in a night at Jomsom before the darshan rather than pushing straight up, because 3,710 metres is high enough to give an unacclimatised pilgrim a headache. Meals are satvik throughout, and the Kathmandu day includes Pashupatinath and the evening Bagmati aarti.
6 days planned in full. Drive times and walking hours are stated so you can judge the pace before you book.

The temple sits at 3,710 metres. Most pilgrims feel only mild breathlessness because you spend just a few hours up there, but headaches are common. This is why we put a night at Jomsom, 2,720 metres, before the darshan rather than driving straight up from Pokhara. Drink water, walk slowly on the temple path, and tell your guide immediately if you feel unwell.
It happens, mostly to cloud in Pokhara rather than at Jomsom. The alternative is a jeep on the Beni–Jomsom road, which takes eight to ten hours on a rough surface and is not comfortable. We hold the group's seats on the next morning's flight and cover the extra Pokhara night on a group departure; on private trips it is billed at cost.
The temple stays open year-round, but heavy snow between late December and February can close the road above Jomsom for days at a time, and the water in the 108 spouts freezes. March to June and September to November are the reliable windows. Mustang sits in the rain shadow, so even the monsoon months usually stay dry and flyable.
Yes. We brief every lodge in advance and use kitchens we have worked with for years, so no onion, no garlic and no non-vegetarian cooking in the same pans. Jomsom and Marpha have limited supply chains, so expect simple dal-bhat, roti, sabzi and Thakali thali rather than variety.
Usually yes. No day involves more than about 400 metres of walking, most of it on a paved path, and ponies cover the final climb. The limiting factors are altitude and cold, not distance. Anyone with a serious heart or lung condition should get a doctor's clearance, and we will arrange wheelchair assistance at the airports on request.
Muktinath with my parents, handled properly
My father is 74 and I was nervous about the altitude at Muktinath. They arranged the Jomsom flight rather than the jeep road, kept the walking short and had oxygen in the vehicle. He completed the darshan comfortably.
