Langtang Valley Trek to Kyanjin Gompa

The closest big Himalayan valley to Kathmandu, and the one that rebuilt itself

Overview

In short

Langtang is the closest major trekking valley to Kathmandu and the cheapest of the big three, because there is no flight to buy — you drive. That drive is also the hardest part of the trip: seven to eight hours to Syabrubesi on a road that is rough for the last three. Once walking, the valley climbs steadily through oak and rhododendron to Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 m in four days, which is gentle enough that altitude is rarely the issue here that it is in the Khumbu. The valley was devastated in the 2015 earthquake, when a co-seismic avalanche off Langtang Lirung buried the original village and killed more than three hundred people. It has been rebuilt on a safer terrace and reopened in 2016, and the lodges you stay in are largely new. Local people will talk about it if you ask; we would suggest letting them raise it.

Permits arranged for you

Kyanjin Ri, 4,773 m (optional); Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 m is the highest night is the high point of this route. Langtang National Park entry permit, TIMS card. We file these on your behalf; the cost is inside your package price unless the exclusions say otherwise.

The altitude profile

Where you sleep each night, day one to day 10. This is the chart worth reading before the itinerary — it is what determines whether you enjoy the trek.

4,773 mDay 1Day 10
Highest point: Kyanjin Ri, 4,773 m (optional); Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 m is the highest night. Flat stretches are acclimatisation days, not filler — the profile is drawn from the overnight stops in the itinerary below.

What you will actually do

  • Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 m, with the Langtang Lirung glacier directly above
  • Optional dawn climb of Kyanjin Ri, 4,773 m, for the full valley panorama
  • Yak-cheese factory at Kyanjin, running since a Swiss project in the 1950s
  • Rhododendron and bamboo forest between Syabrubesi and Lama Hotel
  • No domestic flight, so no weather-cancellation risk to the trek itself
  • Langtang National Park — red panda and Himalayan tahr country

Day by day

10 days planned in full. Drive times and walking hours are stated so you can judge the pace before you book.

  1. Day 1

    Arrive Kathmandu

    Kathmandu
Met at Tribhuvan airport and driven to Thamel, 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. Afternoon kit check with your guide, who will tell you honestly what to leave behind, and a walk to hire anything missing. Trek briefing at 6pm covering the road to Syabrubesi and the daily schedule.
    Meals included
    No meals included
    Overnight
    3-star hotel, Kathmandu
    Transfer
    Airport to Thamel, 30–45 minutes
  2. Day 2

    The long road to Syabrubesi

    Syabrubesi
Leave at 7am for the 122 km drive north to Syabrubesi at 1,460 m. It takes seven to eight hours: tarmac as far as Trishuli, then a rough, winding descent into the Bhote Koshi gorge. There is nothing pleasant about the last three hours, and saying otherwise would be dishonest. Arrive mid-afternoon.
    Meals included
    Lunch, Dinner
    Overnight
    Teahouse, Syabrubesi 1,460 m
    Transfer
Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, 7–8 hours by private vehicle
  3. Day 3

Into the gorge to Lama Hotel

    Lama Hotel
Cross the Bhote Koshi and climb along the Langtang Khola through bamboo and oak forest, gaining 1,010 m to Lama Hotel at 2,470 m over about six hours. Langur monkeys are common on this section. Lama Hotel is a cluster of lodges in dense forest rather than a village, and the valley is narrow enough that you see no peaks all day.
    Meals included
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
    Overnight
    Teahouse, Lama Hotel 2,470 m
  4. Day 4

Out of the forest to Langtang Village

    Langtang Village
Six hours and 960 m of climbing to Langtang Village at 3,430 m. The forest thins around Ghoda Tabela and the valley opens; Langtang Lirung at 7,227 m appears on your left. You pass the boulder field and memorial that mark where the old village stood before the 2015 avalanche. The rebuilt village sits above it.

  5. Day 5

Short day up to Kyanjin Gompa

    Kyanjin Gompa
A deliberately short three to four hours, gaining 440 m to Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 m past mani walls and the water-driven prayer wheels at Mundu. Arrive by lunch, which leaves the afternoon for the monastery and the yak-cheese factory, and gives your body a half-day at the new altitude before tomorrow's climb.

  6. Day 6

Kyanjin Ri at dawn, then the glacier

    Kyanjin Gompa
Optional 4am start for Kyanjin Ri at 4,773 m — 900 m of steep, relentless ascent taking three hours up and ninety minutes down, rewarded with the whole Langtang range at sunrise. Anyone who would rather not can walk the flat valley floor towards the Langshisha Kharka and the glacier snout instead. Both parties are back for lunch.

  7. Day 7

    Back down to Lama Hotel

    Lama Hotel
Retrace the valley, losing 1,400 m over six to seven hours to Lama Hotel. Descending this fast is harder on knees than the climb was on lungs, which is what the trekking poles are for. The views behind you are better than they were on the way up, because you are now facing the peaks rather than climbing away from them.
    Meals included
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
    Overnight
    Teahouse, Lama Hotel 2,470 m
  8. Day 8

    Down to Syabrubesi

    Syabrubesi
Five to six hours back through the gorge to Syabrubesi, with a stop at the hot springs at Tatopani if the group wants one. Last night on the trail; this is when the guide and porter tips are usually handed over, as one pot from the whole group.

Questions about this trip

Is Langtang easier than Everest Base Camp?

Considerably. Langtang tops out at 3,870 m sleeping altitude against 5,164 m at Gorak Shep, so altitude sickness is far less likely, and the trek is four days shorter. The walking days are similar in length. The hard part of Langtang is the road, not the trail.

How bad is the drive to Syabrubesi?

It is seven to eight hours, and the last three are on rough unsealed road through a gorge. Motion sickness is common; take something for it before you leave rather than halfway. We use a private vehicle rather than the local bus, which makes a real difference on that stretch.

Is it appropriate to ask about the 2015 earthquake?

Many people in the valley will talk about it openly, and tourism is central to how Langtang has recovered. Our guidance is to let local people raise it rather than opening with it, and to treat the memorial site above the old village as the grave it is. Photography there is best avoided.

Do I need a porter?

Not strictly, but we include one shared between two trekkers because carrying 12 kg for six hours a day changes the trip considerably. If you would rather carry your own pack, tell us at booking and we will reduce the price accordingly — we will not charge you for a service you decline.
