Overview

In short

The Sanctuary is a glacial basin roughly four kilometres across, entered through a gorge barely a few hundred metres wide, and ringed by Annapurna I at 8,091 m, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna and Machhapuchhre. Standing at base camp at 4,130 m, you have peaks on every compass point, which is not true anywhere on the Everest side. Getting there takes six walking days from Pokhara through rhododendron forest, Gurung villages and stone staircases that go on longer than seems reasonable. One thing to be clear about: the section between Hinku Cave and Deurali runs under avalanche-prone slopes, and after heavy snow — most often in late winter and early spring — it can be genuinely dangerous or closed outright. We will turn a group round there rather than push through, and no itinerary that promises otherwise is being straight with you.

Permits arranged for you

Annapurna Base Camp, 4,130 m is the high point of this route. Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), NPR 3,000 (about USD 22), TIMS card, NPR 2,000 (about USD 15). We file these on your behalf; the cost is inside your package price unless the exclusions say otherwise.

Day by day

11 days planned in full. Drive times and walking hours are stated so you can judge the pace before you book.

  1. Day 1

Arrive Pokhara, briefing on the lakeside

    Pokhara
Arrive at Pokhara airport, 25 minutes from Kathmandu by air or six to seven hours by road, and transfer to a Lakeside hotel at 822 m. The afternoon is a gear check and permit paperwork, with ACAP and TIMS cards issued at the Nepal Tourism Board office. Machhapuchhre is visible from most rooftops when the cloud lifts.

  2. Day 2

Drive to Kimche and walk up to Ghandruk

    Ghandruk
A two-hour jeep ride to Kimche on a rough hill road, then a two-hour climb of stone steps to Ghandruk at 1,940 m. Ghandruk is a slate-roofed Gurung village of about 1,200 people, terraced into the hillside with Annapurna South directly above. The small Gurung museum near the upper village is worth the half hour.

  3. Day 3

    Ghandruk to Chhomrong

    Chhomrong
Five hours with a punishing shape: up to Kimrong Danda at 2,270 m, all the way down to the Kimrong Khola at 1,700 m, then back up to Chhomrong at 2,170 m. Net gain is only 230 m but you climb over 800 m in total. Chhomrong is the last village with shops, bakeries and reliable phone signal.

  4. Day 4

    Chhomrong to Dovan

    Dovan
Five to six hours. The day opens with 2,500 stone steps down to the Chhomrong Khola and an equal climb up the other side to Sinuwa. From there the trail enters the Modi Khola gorge proper, through bamboo forest to Bamboo at 2,310 m and on to Dovan at 2,600 m. Damp, green and loud with the river below.

  5. Day 5

Dovan to Deurali past Hinku Cave

    Deurali
Four hours and 630 m up, past the Himalaya Hotel to the Hinku Cave overhang at 3,170 m. This is the avalanche corridor: after fresh snow your guide checks conditions and timing before committing, and groups cross early when the slopes are cold. Deurali at 3,230 m is the last stop before the Sanctuary gate.

  6. Day 6

    Deurali to Machhapuchhre Base Camp

    Machhapuchhre Base Camp
A short day by design — three hours for 470 m — because this is where altitude starts to matter. The gorge opens out, the forest ends, and you walk onto open moraine at Machhapuchhre Base Camp, 3,700 m, directly beneath the fishtail summit that Nepal has never permitted anyone to climb. Afternoons cloud over almost daily.

  7. Day 7

    Up to Annapurna Base Camp

    Annapurna Base Camp
Two hours and 430 m of gentle climbing on moraine brings you into the Sanctuary at 4,130 m by mid-morning, leaving the whole afternoon to watch the light move around the basin. Annapurna I rises 3,960 m above your lodge. Rooms are unheated, the dining room runs on a yak-dung stove, and it is the coldest night of the trek.

  8. Day 8

Sunrise at ABC, long descent to Bamboo

    Bamboo
Out at first light for the alpenglow on Annapurna I, then breakfast and a 1,820 m descent — six to seven hours through MBC, Deurali and Dovan to Bamboo at 2,310 m. Going down through the avalanche section early in the day is deliberate. Knees take a beating; this is the day poles matter most.
    Meals included
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
    Overnight
    Teahouse, Bamboo
  9. Day 9

Bamboo to Jhinu Danda and the hot springs

    Jhinu Danda
Five hours back up to Sinuwa, down the staircase and across to Chhomrong, then a 40-minute drop to Jhinu Danda at 1,780 m. Twenty minutes further down are three stone pools fed by a hot spring on the Modi Khola bank, open until about 8pm. Ten days of walking come out of your legs there.

  10. Day 10

Walk out to Siwai and drive to Pokhara

    Pokhara
Ninety minutes down to the road head at Siwai, then a two-and-a-half-hour jeep to Pokhara. The rest of the day is yours: paragliding off Sarangkot, the World Peace Pagoda across the lake, or a chair by Phewa Lake. This day also functions as the weather buffer if anything upstream ran late.

    Depart Pokhara

    Pokhara
Transfer to Pokhara airport for the 25-minute flight to Kathmandu, or to the tourist bus stand if you are travelling by road. Flights out of Pokhara are cancelled in low cloud, so if you have an international connection the same day we will put you on the earliest departure and say so plainly at booking.

Questions about this trip

How real is the avalanche risk between Hinku Cave and Deurali?

Real enough that people have died there, most in late winter and early spring after heavy snowfall. The gorge walls above that section shed regularly. Guides check with the ACAP post at Chhomrong, cross early in the morning when snow is bonded, and turn back if conditions are wrong. December to March carries the highest risk; October and November the lowest.

Do I need to acclimatise for Annapurna Base Camp?

Less than on the Everest routes, because 4,130 m is the ceiling and you reach it gradually over six days from 822 m. Even so, the Deurali to MBC to ABC sequence gains about 900 m across two days, so we split it rather than running it as one push. Mild headaches at ABC are common and usually settle overnight.

Is there a way to shorten this trek?

Yes, to nine days by driving to Jhinu Danda instead of Kimche and skipping Ghandruk, which saves one day at each end. You lose the best Gurung village on the route and gain nothing but time. If your schedule is genuinely tight, we would rather send you to Mardi Himal, which is a better seven-day trek than a compressed ABC.

What are the teahouses like inside the Sanctuary?

Basic and getting steadily more expensive as you go up. ABC has four lodges, all with plywood twin rooms, shared toilets and no heating outside the dining room. Meals are dal bhat, noodles, soup and porridge, priced roughly double Chhomrong. A minus-15 sleeping bag is worth carrying for the ABC and MBC nights alone.
