Maldives vs Mauritius vs Bali: Which One Is Actually Right for Your Trip?

The one-line difference

The Maldives is a resort, not a country you travel around — you pick one island, you stay on it, and the quality of the trip is the quality of that single choice. Mauritius is a real island with roads, towns, mountains and a national park, where you stay in one hotel and drive out to things. Bali is a place with a culture and an interior, where the beach is one component among several.

Almost every disappointed review of these three destinations traces back to someone booking the wrong one of those three models. The couple who wanted to explore and ended up on a 400-metre sandbank. The family who wanted a resort holiday and ended up navigating Bali's Canggu traffic. The honeymooners who booked Mauritius expecting a Maldivian water villa and got a beachfront room with a busy public beach next door.

What each one costs per night

Comparing headline package prices is misleading because the three include very different things. The Maldives figure almost always includes a seaplane or speedboat transfer worth USD 200 to USD 600 per couple and a meal plan that you cannot realistically opt out of. Bali's does not include much of anything beyond the room.

Realistic per-night spends, per couple, including food and the activities most people actually do:

• Maldives — USD 400–600 a night for a mid-tier beach villa on half board; USD 750–1,600 for an overwater villa at a five-star. Plus the transfer, charged once each way.
• Mauritius — USD 200–360 a night at a good four- or five-star on half board, with the airport transfer at USD 45–80 and a car hire around USD 35 a day.
• Bali — USD 80–200 a night for an excellent private-pool villa, USD 280–450 for a genuine luxury resort in Uluwatu or Ubud. Meals outside the hotel run USD 10–30 a head.
• Typical 6-night trip for two, all in from Kathmandu: Maldives USD 3,650–6,800, Mauritius USD 2,400–3,850, Bali USD 1,600–2,950.

Transfer friction: the cost nobody budgets for

In the Maldives the transfer is a second booking with its own timetable, and it shapes the whole trip. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, roughly 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., so a one-stop routing landing at Malé at 6 p.m. means an unplanned night in a Hulhumalé hotel before you reach the resort. Seaplane transfers run USD 250–450 per person return. Speedboats are cheaper at USD 90–200 but only reach resorts within about 50 km of Malé.

Mauritius has one airport, at Plaisance in the southeast, and the drive to the northern hotel belt around Grand Baie is 60 to 75 minutes on decent roads. The west coast at Flic-en-Flac is about 50 minutes. It is a normal transfer and it costs normal money.

Bali's friction is different and it is understated in most brochures. Ngurah Rai to Seminyak is 12 km and can take 70 minutes. Ubud is 90 minutes to two hours. Uluwatu to Ubud, which looks close on a map, is a two-and-a-half hour crawl at the wrong time of day. Anyone planning to split their Bali week across three areas should budget half a day of driving for each move.

What each one does badly

The Maldives is boring for anyone who is not content with water, food and each other. Once you have snorkelled the house reef twice, done a sunset cruise and had the spa, there is nothing else, and there is nowhere to go. Excursions cost USD 70–170 per person. Alcohol is resort-only and priced accordingly. Families with active nine-year-olds often find day four difficult.

Mauritius has the weakest beaches of the three at the mid-range end. Many public beaches are narrow, the lagoon is shallow and weedy in places, and the difference between a good hotel's stretch of sand and the one next door is stark. The island is also genuinely wet on the plateau and in the southeast for a good part of the year, and the January-to-March cyclone season is real.

Bali is not a swimming destination in the way the other two are. The southern beaches have strong currents and surf, the Kuta-Seminyak sand is grey volcanic, and the clean turquoise water most people are picturing is at Nusa Penida or the Gilis, which is a boat trip away. Bali's traffic, its crowds at Tanah Lot and Tegallalang, and the sheer volume of tourists in the south all surprise first-timers.

Which suits a honeymoon, which suits a family

For a honeymoon with a budget above USD 4,000 for two, the Maldives is unmatched and nothing else is close. The privacy of a water villa, a house reef off your deck steps, and the total absence of logistics for five days is precisely what a honeymoon a week after a long South Asian wedding needs. Below that budget the Maldives becomes a compromised version of itself, and Bali does the same job better.

For a family with children under twelve, Mauritius wins. The kids' clubs at the Belle Mare and Flic-en-Flac hotels are excellent, the lagoon is calm and shallow, and there is enough on land — Chamarel's coloured earth, Casela's safari park, Île aux Cerfs, the Black River Gorges — to fill a week without anyone getting restless. Nothing needs a boat.

For a first international trip, a multi-generational group, or anyone whose budget is the deciding factor, Bali. It absorbs a wide range of budgets, it has genuine cultural depth in Ubud and the east, and a family of four can have an excellent week for what two people would spend on four nights in the Maldives.

Visas, flights, and how far each really is

The Maldives grants a free visa on arrival to every nationality with a confirmed hotel booking and a return ticket — 30 days as standard, and 90 days for Indian passport holders under a bilateral arrangement. There is no direct Kathmandu–Malé service, so allow 7 to 10 hours via Delhi, Colombo or Dubai. From Indian metros it is a 2 h 45 m to 4 h 30 m direct hop, which is why it remains the easiest of the three to reach from the subcontinent.

Mauritius grants Nepali and Indian passport holders a free visa on arrival, 60 days for Indian nationals; confirm the current entitlement for your own nationality before booking. There is no direct service from Kathmandu — expect 12 to 16 hours via Delhi, Mumbai or Dubai. Direct flights run from Mumbai and Delhi in 6 to 7 hours. Mauritius is 1 h 45 m behind Nepal time, which is negligible.

Indonesia grants Nepali and Indian passport holders a visa on arrival at Denpasar for IDR 500,000, about USD 35, valid 30 days and extendable once. There is no direct Kathmandu–Denpasar service; the one-stop routings via Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Bangkok run 9 to 12 hours. Bali is 2 h 15 m ahead of Nepal time, which costs you most of the first morning.
