The short version
Nagarkot occupies a ridge at roughly 2,175 m on the eastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley, about 32 km and 90 minutes to two hours from Thamel depending on traffic through Bhaktapur. Its draw is the sunrise view: on a clear morning between October and March the panorama runs from Annapurna II in the west through Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang and Dorje Lakpa to a distant Everest, roughly 160 km away and visible only as a small dark triangle. Dhulikhel, 30 km from Kathmandu on the Araniko Highway at about 1,550 m, offers a similar view from a working Newar town rather than a hotel strip, with an old bazaar of carved windows. Both make good bases for short walking: the downhill trail from Nagarkot to Changu Narayan takes about three hours, and the ridge walk from Dhulikhel to the Namobuddha stupa takes four to five. Neither needs any altitude preparation, which makes them the practical soft-adventure option for families and older travellers.

On a clear morning from October to March, yes, but manage expectations. Everest is about 160 km away and shows as a small dark triangle behind nearer ridges, not a dominant peak. The rest of the panorama — Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Manaslu and Annapurna II — is far more impressive from Nagarkot than Everest itself is.
Nagarkot has the higher ridge at 2,175 m and the wider mountain view, and it is the shorter drive if you are coming via Bhaktapur. Dhulikhel is 600 m lower, warmer at night, and has a real Newar town rather than a hotel strip. If the sunrise is the point, choose Nagarkot; if you want to walk and eat locally, choose Dhulikhel.
About 32 km, which takes 90 minutes to two hours depending on how bad the traffic is getting out through Bhaktapur. Leave the city before 3 pm or after 7 pm to avoid the worst of it. Most guests combine the transfer with a Bhaktapur Durbar Square visit on the way up.
Yes, these are the softest mountain options in Nepal. At 2,175 m and 1,550 m there is no altitude concern, roads reach the hotel door, and the views require nothing more than stepping onto a terrace at 6 am. The Changu Narayan and Namobuddha walks are optional and can be shortened by meeting the vehicle partway.
