Muktinath & Jomsom tour packages

Muktinath is a temple complex at 3,710 m in Lower Mustang, revered by Hindus as one of the 108 Divya Desams and by Buddhists as Chumig Gyatsa. Jomsom, at 2,720 m, is the district headquarters and airstrip 20 km below it, and the usual staging point for pilgrims arriving from Pokhara.

Muktinath & Jomsom in one paragraph

The short version

Muktinath sits at 3,710 m on the eastern flank of the Kali Gandaki, in the arid Trans-Himalayan belt between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. The Vishnu Mandir at its centre is one of the 108 Divya Desams of Vaishnavite tradition and the only one outside India, while Tibetan Buddhists know the site as Chumig Gyatsa, the hundred waters. Pilgrims bathe under 108 bull-headed spouts fed by glacial melt and in two kunda pools, and visit the adjoining Jwala Mai temple where natural gas burns above spring water. Jomsom, 20 km down-valley at 2,720 m, has the airstrip: flights from Pokhara take about 20 minutes but run only in the early morning, because the Kali Gandaki wind rises hard after 10 am. Most Indian pilgrims now come by jeep instead, roughly 170 km from Pokhara over eight to ten hours. Kagbeni, at 2,800 m, is a 30-minute detour and the gateway to Upper Mustang.

March to May and October are the strongest windows, with warm days and reliable Jomsom flights. The rain shadow keeps Muktinath itself fairly dry in monsoon, but the Pokhara–Beni approach road slips in July and August, so allow spare days. December to February is clear and very cold, with snow occasionally closing the last stretch to the temple.

Muktinath & Jomsom questions, answered

How do Indian pilgrims reach Muktinath?

Most fly or drive to Pokhara, then either take a 20-minute morning flight to Jomsom or a jeep along the 170 km road, which takes eight to ten hours. From Jomsom it is a 20 km jeep ride to Ranipauwa, the settlement below the temple, and a 15-minute walk uphill. Indian nationals need no visa for Nepal.

Why do Jomsom flights only operate in the morning?

The Kali Gandaki gorge funnels a strong up-valley wind that typically starts around 10 am and builds through the afternoon. The airstrip has no instrument approach, so operators schedule all departures between roughly 6.30 and 9.30 am. Afternoon cancellations are normal, and a cancelled flight usually means a full-day jeep instead.

Is Muktinath difficult at 3,710 m?

For most people, no, but it is high enough to matter. Driving from Pokhara at 822 m to Ranipauwa at 3,710 m in one or two days is a fast ascent, and mild altitude headaches are common. Spend a night at Jomsom or Marpha on the way up, drink steadily, and avoid alcohol the night before.

Can Muktinath be combined with Upper Mustang?

Yes, and it is the standard sequence. Kagbeni, 30 minutes from Jomsom, is the checkpost where Upper Mustang begins. Pilgrims doing Muktinath alone need only ACAP and TIMS; going north of Kagbeni requires the USD 500 restricted permit, a licensed guide and a minimum of two people.
